CHEROHALA SKYWAY RIDE
RIDE ON THE CHEROHALA SKYWAY - SEPTEMBER 19, 2009
On Saturday, September 19, 2009, 10 brave individuals decided that the strong rains of the week and day were not going to discourage them from making the long anticipated trip over the Cherohala Skyway. The rains had come and flooded Atlanta and much of North Georgia and yet some came from the metro area to ride!
The weather forecast was for showers and hard downpours for the entire day, but as we left Ellijay, the weather broke and we had semi clear skies all of the way to the top of the Skyway, where we ran in to fog and clouds. Yes clouds! At its peak, the Skyway is around 5400 ft. above sea level. It is truly a Skyway a mile in the Sky!
As we ventured down from the 40°+ temperature on the top of the mountains to the 75° temperatures in Tellico Plains, TN, we said our good-byes to 2 members of our group as they returned home by way of a different route, while the rest of us went into Madisonville, TN. and ate lunch and had a great time of fellowship around the table. When we emerged from the restaurant with our bellies full, we mounted up and headed south towards Georgia, only to have the rain finally catch us.
Even with the on and off again rain showers, everyone reported having a great ride!
Below are some pictures from the ride.
